What a transit is in astrological usage

The calculation is straightforward: current positions come from ephemerides, natal positions from the birth chart, and the angular relationship follows. What astrology adds is the assertion that such a configuration corresponds to a period with a particular character.

Speed determines duration

  • The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so lunar transits last hours and are treated as minor.
  • Mercury, Venus and Mars produce transits lasting days to a few weeks.
  • Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac; a Jupiter transit to a natal point lasts weeks.
  • Saturn takes roughly 29.5 years, and its transits are read as extended and formative periods.
  • Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly that a single transit can persist for a year or more.

Retrogrades and repeated contacts

Because planets periodically appear to reverse direction against the stars — a perspective effect of Earth overtaking them — a transiting planet can cross the same natal degree, reverse back over it, and cross it a third time going forward.

Astrological practice reads this triple contact as a structured sequence rather than a repetition, and the possibility of it is why outer-planet transits are described as spanning long periods with distinct phases. Astronomically, retrograde motion is entirely apparent: the planet never actually reverses its orbital direction.
