The day-for-a-year rule

Secondary progression takes the positions of the planets on the nth day after birth as representing the nth year of life. A chart for someone aged thirty uses the sky as it was thirty days after their birth.

The tradition is explicit that this is a symbolic correspondence rather than a physical one. Nothing in astronomy connects the sky one month after a birth to a person's thirtieth year; the rule is a convention within the interpretive system, and practitioners generally describe it that way.

Solar arc direction advances every point in the chart by the same amount the progressed Sun has moved — roughly a degree per year. This keeps the chart's internal geometry intact while shifting it as a whole against the natal positions, producing a different set of contacts from secondary progressions.

Other directional methods exist, including primary directions, which are computationally intricate and were central to earlier traditional practice. Which technique a practitioner uses is a matter of school and preference; there is no agreed hierarchy among them.

Progressions versus transits

The two techniques are used differently within the tradition. Transits use actual current planetary positions and are read as external circumstances or events; progressions use symbolically advanced positions and are read as internal development.

The distinction matters for understanding what is being claimed. A transit at least refers to a real configuration of the sky at the moment in question. A progression refers to a configuration that occurred decades earlier and is being mapped onto the present by rule.
