NASA's imagery is not in one place. It is distributed across mission archives, institutional collections and science data centres, each organised differently — and knowing which archive holds what is the practical skill in finding a specific image.

The archive landscape
- Mission and programme archives hold imagery organised by spacecraft and observation, and are the authoritative record for a given mission.
- Institutional archives such as those operated by STScI hold space telescope data and the processed releases derived from it.
- Discipline-specific science archives hold calibrated instrument data — for planetary, high-energy, infrared and solar physics — intended for research use rather than viewing.
- Public-facing galleries curate a selection for general audiences, and are the easiest to browse but the least complete.
Press images and science data are different products
A published release image and the archived science data behind it are not the same thing. The release has been processed for display: filters combined and assigned to colour channels, contrast stretched non-linearly to make faint structure visible, artefacts removed, and the field cropped and rotated for composition.
The archived data is calibrated but not composed — separate exposures per filter, with instrumental signatures characterised rather than hidden. Research uses the latter. Anyone expecting to download a finished picture from a science archive will instead find files requiring substantial processing, which is a frequent source of confusion.
Proprietary periods and open release
Most major observatories operate a proprietary period, typically around a year, during which data is available only to the team that proposed the observation. After it expires the data becomes public and anyone can use it.
This is why archival research is productive: a large share of published results now come from data someone else obtained for a different purpose. It is also why archives keep producing new science long after a mission ends — Hubble and Spitzer archives remain actively mined.
