Overview
Roman mythology gave modern astronomy the names of the planets and many enduring symbols. This topic presents those myths as cultural heritage, alongside their adaptation from Greek and earlier tradition.

Naming the planets
The five planets visible to the unaided eye were associated with deities long before Rome. Mesopotamian tradition linked them to specific gods, the Greeks mapped those onto their own pantheon, and Rome mapped them again onto Latin equivalents. The result is the set English still uses: Mercury for the swiftest, Venus for the brightest, Mars for the red one, Jupiter for the largest and brightest of the outer planets, Saturn for the slowest of the classical five.
The association is not arbitrary in every case. Mercury moves fastest across the sky and carries the name of the messenger god; Mars is visibly orange-red and carries the name of the god of war. Others reflect brightness and stateliness rather than any observable property.
The two later planets
Uranus, discovered by William Herschel in 1781, breaks the pattern by carrying a Greek name in its Latinised form. Herschel proposed naming it after King George III; that did not achieve international acceptance, and Johann Bode's suggestion of Uranus — the mythological father of Saturn, extending the generational sequence — eventually prevailed.
Neptune, identified in 1846 following prediction from irregularities in the orbit of Uranus, took the Roman sea god's name and restored the convention. Pluto, discovered in 1930 and reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, was named for the Roman god of the underworld, following a suggestion from an eleven-year-old in Oxford.
Rome's calendar legacy
The most consequential Roman contribution to practical astronomy was calendrical. The pre-existing Roman calendar had drifted badly out of step with the seasons, and in 46 BCE Julius Caesar introduced a reformed solar calendar of 365 days with a leap day every fourth year, developed with the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes.
The Julian year of 365.25 days slightly overestimates the tropical year, accumulating roughly three days of error every four centuries. The Gregorian reform of 1582 corrected this by dropping three leap days in every four hundred years, and that refined version remains the civil calendar in international use. The month names July and August commemorate Julius Caesar and Augustus.
What Roman astronomy did and did not do
Rome's role in astronomy was primarily preservation, application and transmission rather than original theory. Pliny the Elder's Natural History compiled Greek astronomical knowledge for a Latin readership; Roman engineering applied astronomy to surveying, timekeeping and navigation. The major theoretical work of the Roman period — Ptolemy's Almagest — was written in Greek, in Roman Egypt.
The lasting inheritance is therefore linguistic and calendrical rather than mathematical: the names of the planets, most of the constellation names in their Latin forms, and the structure of the civil year.
