An extended, roughly spherical cloud of dark matter within which a galaxy or cluster is embedded.

In ΛCDM, galaxies form inside dark-matter halos whose gravity holds them together and sets their rotation. Halos merge and grow over cosmic time, seeding the cosmic web.
