The recommended method, worked

Take 14 November 1987. Reduce each component separately, holding master numbers. Month: 11 — a master number, held as 11. Day: 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5. Year: 1987 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7.

Now sum the three results: 11 + 5 + 7 = 23, which reduces to 2 + 3 = 5. The life path number is 5. Working the same date by summing every digit at once gives 1 + 1 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 32, then 3 + 2 = 5 — the same answer here, but the two methods do not always agree.

Where the methods diverge

The disagreement arises when a component reduces to a master number that would be lost if all digits were summed at once. Reducing components separately preserves an 11 or 22 at an intermediate stage, which can change the final total.

Most contemporary numerological literature favours reducing components separately for exactly this reason, and treats the all-at-once method as an oversimplification. It is a genuine methodological split within the tradition, and a tool that does not state which method it uses is hiding a real ambiguity.
