Houses

The twelve houses and the life areas tradition links to them.

Overview

The houses are twelve divisions of the local sky, derived from the horizon and meridian at a specific time and place. Unlike the signs, which divide the ecliptic, the houses divide the observer's own sky — and there is no agreement on how to do it.

  • Houses are location- and time-specific; signs are not.
  • There is no single house system — Placidus, Whole Sign, Koch, Equal and others all differ.
  • Some systems break down mathematically at high latitudes.
  • Two astrologers using different systems will place the same planet in different houses.

What the houses divide

Signs divide the ecliptic; houses divide the sky as seen from a particular place at a particular moment. The first house begins at the Ascendant — the eastern horizon — and the tenth begins at or near the Midheaven, the highest point of the ecliptic.

This is what makes a chart specific to a birth rather than to a date. Two people born on the same day in different places, or hours apart in the same place, share nearly identical planetary positions but entirely different house structures.

Traditional house significations

  • First — self, appearance, outward manner. Second — resources, possessions, values.
  • Third — communication, siblings, local environment. Fourth — home, family, origins.
  • Fifth — creativity, play, children. Sixth — work, routine, health.
  • Seventh — partnership, one-to-one relationships. Eighth — shared resources, transformation, inheritance.
  • Ninth — travel, higher learning, belief. Tenth — career, public standing.
  • Eleventh — friendships, groups, aspirations. Twelfth — solitude, the unconscious, what is hidden.

The systems, and why they disagree

Whole Sign houses, the oldest documented system, make each house exactly one sign, starting from the sign containing the Ascendant. Equal House divides the ecliptic into twelve 30-degree segments starting from the Ascendant's exact degree. Placidus, the most widely used in modern Western practice, divides the diurnal and nocturnal arcs by time. Koch, Regiomontanus, Campanus and Porphyry each use different geometric constructions.

These produce materially different results. A planet near a house boundary can fall in different houses under different systems, and quadrant systems produce houses of very unequal size. There is no measurement that settles which is correct, because the question is not empirical — it is a choice of convention within an interpretive framework.

The high-latitude problem

Time-based quadrant systems including Placidus and Koch become mathematically ill-behaved at high latitudes. Above the Arctic and Antarctic circles parts of the ecliptic may not rise or set at all on some dates, so the arcs these systems divide can become undefined.

In those cases the systems either fail outright or produce extremely distorted houses. Practitioners working at high latitudes commonly use Whole Sign or Equal House for this reason — a case where a purely mathematical constraint drives a choice within the tradition.
